Disaster Kits

In a disaster, it may take up to a minimum of three days before help arrives. Emergency kits, also known as 72 hour kits, are an important part of your survival. Each member of your household should have their own pack consisting of food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days.

Helpful Tips:

Make a note in your planner or calendar to check your kit every 6 months to be sure that food, water, and medications are not expired, clothing fits, documents are current, and batteries are charged. Update your kit as needed.
Small toys, stuffed animals, cards, or games are important for small children. Even if you do not have children in your household, it is a good idea to carry one small item of this nature,just in the event that a child nearby may need it.
Allow older children to be responsible for their own packs. Teach them to pack, check, and update their kit regularly.
Be aware of what you're packing. Some items may leak, melt, break open, or flavor other items. Divide items and seal them in Ziplock bags as necessary.
When packing food items, avoid pop-top cans as they can explode or leak. Avoid candies that melt or become sticky with heat. Avoid jerky and mint-flavored items that can scent or flavor other items over time.
Know your pack. Be familiar with your pack and where things are located. In an emergency, the last thing you want is to dump out your entire pack searching for one specific essential item.
If you have the means, complete 72 hour kits can be purchased on many preparedness websites. However, kits do not have to be expensive. You can start with a duffel bag of snacks and clothing and add other items bit by bit as you can afford them. This option also gives you the freedom to select what you need and leave out what you don't.
You can carry any item you feel is portable and necessary to your family's survival. The following list includes a minimum of basic essentials.
